How to open M3U and M3U8 playlists on Android

M3U is a text list of media addresses, not a video file. M3U8 uses UTF-8 and can describe either a channel list or the segments of an HLS stream. To build a channel library, use an IPTV playlist containing channel names and stream addresses from your source.

Open a saved playlist file

  1. Install IPatyj IPTV Player from Google Play. Save your own .m3u or .m3u8 file on your phone and note its folder.
  2. Tap the file in your Android file manager. If Android offers a choice of compatible apps, select IPatyj IPTV Player.
  3. In the app, check the filename in the “Open playlist?” dialog. Tap “Add playlist” only if this is the file you intended to open.
  4. After import, select a channel from the list. Internet streams require a connection and valid access to the source.

If Android does not offer IPatyj

You do not need to rename the file or change your default app.

  1. Open IPatyj. If the library is empty, tap “Load playlist”. If you already have channels, tap “My playlists” above the channel list.
  2. Select the “File .m3u” tab, then tap “Choose an .m3u / .m3u8 file”.
  3. Find the saved file in the Android file picker, select it and wait for import to finish.

Why a file may not open

  • The saved file contains an HTML sign-in page or an error message instead of a playlist. Obtain the actual M3U/M3U8 file from your source.
  • An HLS segment playlist is different from a catalogue of channels. Ask your source for a playlist intended for an IPTV player.
  • The file is empty, damaged or contains no recognisable channel entries.
  • The file was imported, but its stream addresses have expired, require access or are unavailable on your network. This is a separate playback issue.

Step-by-step guides

Install from Google Play

IPatyj plays the sources you provide. The app does not supply channels, films or a TV subscription. These guides cover the available Mobile version; QR pairing and Phone → TV playlist transfer belong to the separate Universal version.
